The laptop on Dana's kitchen table is open, but the screen is dark — has been dark, she says, since roughly the day she bought it. What fills the room instead is a voice: flat, synthetic, rattling along at a speed that sounds less like speech than like a dial-up modem arguing with itself. This is VoiceOver, the screen reader built into every Mac and iPhone, and Dana has it cranked to a rate I cannot parse at all. She parses it fine. While I sit there nodding at nothing, she moves through a shopping site, checks her bank balance and, with an audible sigh, opens a government form.
I had come to watch a blind person use the internet. Within an hour it was clear I had the framing backwards. Dana is not using a damaged version of my web. She is reading the web's actual text — the code beneath the paint, the part the rest of us never see — and the code is a mess. The screen reader turns out to be the only honest critic on the internet: it reviews what developers shipped, not what they rendered.
A screen reader doesn't see pixels. It reads a page's underlying structure and speaks it aloud, and Dana skims the way you do — by headlines. She taps a key and hops from heading to heading, never touching the body text. When a page has no headings, and an astonishing number don't, there is no skimming. Every visit becomes a full linear reading: the cookie banner, forty navigation links, the autoplaying carousel, all of it, every time, like being legally required to hear the terms and conditions before each sentence. Images without descriptions are read as their filenames, which means Dana moves through a ghost world of hero-banner-v3-FINAL-final2.jpg. Buttons without labels are announced as, simply, "button."
On one checkout page, the voice says: "Button. Button. Button." Three identical doors in a hallway.
Button, button, button
Monday is shopping: vacuum bags, the least glamorous purchase imaginable. The product photos carry no descriptions, so Dana knows the bags only as "image 40212." She buys them anyway, partly from memory — blind users trade navigation scripts for badly built sites the way commuters trade shortcuts, whole forums of step-by-step instructions for checkout flows that should not require instructions. Tuesday is banking, and here is the week's first surprise: the bank's site mostly works. Not out of kindness. Banks have been sued, repeatedly, and the parts of the web that function for Dana tend to be the parts where someone, at some point, lost in court. In 2016, a blind man named Guillermo Robles tried at least twice to order a customized pizza from Domino's website and app with his screen reader, failed, and sued; when the Supreme Court declined to take Domino's appeal in 2019, the ruling that the Americans with Disabilities Act applies to websites was left standing. Compliance followed liability. Empathy campaigns followed nothing.
Wednesday is travel, and the travel industry appears to have designed its booking flow as an escape room. The fare calendar announces itself as "table, row three, column five, blank." The seat map is a picture. The date picker cannot be operated without a mouse. Dana perseveres for forty minutes, then does what the site has been nudging her toward all along: she phones the airline and listens to hold music, the analog captcha of being willing to wait.
Prove you're human
Thursday is the government form, and it is the week's purest specimen. The form is a PDF that turns out to be a scan — a photograph of a piece of paper. To the screen reader it is a picture of nothing. The HTML version, when she finds it, has a twenty-minute session limit; the form takes longer; her answers evaporate once and she starts over, typing faster. Then, at the end, the final gate: a CAPTCHA. Select all squares containing a traffic light. The internet's standard proof of humanity is a vision test. We built a bouncer that checks IDs at the door of the optometrist's office.
There is, by now, an entire industry devoted to this problem, and its fastest-growing product is the overlay: a little blue icon in the corner of a website promising compliance in a single line of code. The biggest vendor, accessiBe, claimed its AI widget would satisfy 30 percent of the accessibility guidelines immediately and the remaining 70 percent within 48 hours. In January 2025 the Federal Trade Commission called those claims false and unsubstantiated and fined the company a million dollars — after years in which blind users, the supposed beneficiaries, had been saying the widgets often made sites worse. Meanwhile, the boring truth sits in the annual WebAIM audit of the million most-visited home pages: 94.8 percent still fail automatically detectable checks, averaging 51 errors per page, and about 96 percent of those errors fall into just six categories. Low contrast. Missing image descriptions. Unlabeled buttons and form fields. Empty links. A page that never says what language it is in. Not moonshot problems. The digital equivalent of labeling the doors.
The twist is that the genuinely hard problem is the one getting solved. Be My Eyes, an app that since 2015 has connected blind users to sighted volunteers over video, added an AI assistant in 2023 built on OpenAI's GPT-4: snap a photo, get a description, ask follow-up questions. Dana uses it to read her mail and interrogate the vacuum-bag box. A machine can now look at a sunset on her behalf and tell her about the clouds. So that is the state of things: artificial intelligence can describe a photograph, but a bank can't label its login button. The hard problem fell. The easy one stands, because the easy one was never a technical problem. It was an attention problem, industrialized.
The dark monitor test
On Friday, Dana submits the government form on her second attempt, checks that the bags have shipped, confirms her balance, and asks if I want more tea. The voice rattles on; I've stopped hearing it as noise. On the plainly built pages — a simple news article, her credit union — she is faster than I am, because she was never reading the decoration.
There is a cheap audit available to every company with a website, and it requires no consultant: unplug the monitor for one afternoon and try to buy your own product. Not as an empathy exercise — empathy exercises are how we got overlays — but as inspection, because the screen reader reads what you shipped. The accessible web is not some future build. We already made it once, out of plain text and labeled buttons, and then we paved over it. Dana's screen has been dark the whole week. It's the only one in the room showing the internet as it actually is.
